Checking out these cites for relocation we want to live about 20 miles out on 40 acres Cheyenne, Casper or Laramie? (how much, homes)

for more remote + nice community Consider Near Encampment / Saratoga, or... head north and look into Powell / Lovell.

NewCastle and Sundance worth a look, as is nearby SD (Spearfish has a decent economy... college town)

True, but there's no inexpensive land there.

inexpensive land is there for a reason, you can run a cow or horse on 40 acres for more then a couple months. that why the 40 acres cash contract developments

not enough grass on some of those area or water. some of the state you can run 1 cow on 40 acres for a year it varies probably from good irrigated ground of about 5 acres/cow to over a 100acres /cow/year.
that why you see those cheap contract price land you not going to have horses or cows unless you buy a lot of feed.

True - we never ran more than 125 sheep on 450 acres, but we could have - why b/c we had water. With water you get good grass and alfalfa. You rotate your pastures every ten days. You plant clover on empty pastures. You let your animals graze on that clover and alfalfa when it goes to seed.


I was amazed at how newcomers had two horses in a corral with some leftover grass from previous owners - the horses ate it down to the roots, then wondered why their stock was thin and hungry all the time. They blame sheep for doing that too - but not if you rotate pastures.


We lived in a sheep wagon up in Thorofare, losing maybe five lambs to predators - but none starved.

we call those horse ghettos you see them all over the state in every subdivision and small ranchettes
