My family and I are looking to relocate to Rock Springs for my husband's job! All I know is that winter is awful there! We are a young couple in our mid twenties with three kids! Is it family friendly I guess is my biggest question? I know that housing is difficult to find but my husband is willing to commute a bit if he needs to! Anyone have any advice or important info we should think about before making this decision! I would be so grateful to hear anything about the area!

Wow - well, they are WORKING at making it more family friendly. Didn't have a great rep in the 1970's & 1980's, but they are cleaning it up quite a bit. Housing is wicked to try to get anywhere in Wyo. Nearby places to consider (and yes the winters down there can be pretty bad - a lot of wind & snow), but consider Green River, possibly Lyman or Farson as alternatives, but kids will be really bored in Farson - not much there at all... Lyman is really family friendly & Green River is great with the river & Flaming Gorge down there. It's a pretty long way from anywhere to anywhere in Wyo - hook yourself up with a realtor now in that area & put them to work now getting names of landlords to contact. Good luck...and adapt...adapt...adapt...LOL!!

Thanks so much for the info! I really do appreciate it! We are coming from St. George, Utah so if it gets below 50 degrees people don't go outside so I know that is going to be the biggest change for us! I will look at outside places and hopefully will be able to find something to rent without too much of a problem! If you think of anything else that would be good to know....please write to me again!!! Once again....thanks so much for all of the info!

As far as rentals go in the Rocksprings, Green River, Reliance area good luck, with the energy boom that is going on rentals are few and far between and are expensive. I'm Glad I'm out of there now. Depending on how far you want to commute you have a really little town east of RS called Superior its about 32 miles away. To the west you have the "valley" which is the Lyman, Mountain View, Fort Bridger area. This is by far my favorite area within commuting distance of RS. Its about 60 miles away, so it might be a little far. If you have any other questions feel free to ask I lived down there for about 16 years and my parent and little bro are still there.

Wow! That really did help me a bunch! Thanks!! The job we are relocating for has nothing to do with the energy boom actually! So....we are even thinking after a couple of months buying a place somewhere close if everything works out! How is the market as far as actually purchasing real estate? If we found something to rent in the Fort Bridger area would that be like a 45 minute commute or would it be longer? Just curious because it sounds like that is where I would like to be if it is possible! Thanks for all of your help I really appreciate it! I am feeling very overwhelmed right now!

Rentals in the Valley are not the easiest to find. Ft Bridger is on the far west side of the "valley" Your commute would probably be a little more than 45mins depending on your speed. The worst is going to be in winter. This year the I 80 Corridor has been hammered and there were times when it was closed. Housing prices in RockSprings or Green River are highly inflated with the boom that is going on. When I looked into relocating to the valley prices there were beginning to rise but were still reasonable. Im not sure what you are use to for prices on housing but it is very hard to even find a decent home for under 200k. You can get a townhouse for 180-190K

I agree with Psyko - prices are rising but the valley is definitely the best bet for a better place to live. Funny - I remember in the 1970's when the population of Lyman was 365. When I went down there to pick up a gun safe that a guy builds down there & saw the population was over 1200 I had to take a pic of the sign to send to my friend who lived there when it was 365!!! LOL!!! NO housing, NOTHING to do - the most iteresting thing to do was go to the old junk yard from decades ago & roam thru it for old bottles, etc. HOW MUCH it has changed. But Mountain View is nice too - all of that area is nice & also close to the Uinta & Wasatch mountains for recreation. I-80 is wicked in the winter many years (my step-daughter lives in Cheyenne & is a traveling pharmacist for Wal-Mart & during the winter they so thoughtfully had her traveling during the week clear to Evanston, back to Rock Springs for a day during the week, back to Evanston, and then TRY to get home for weekends. She spent a couple of those in Rawlins because she could not get any further. Is as I said in another post - be ready at all times to not make it to where you are going or back home (back up plan like sleeping bag with you at all time, flashlight, emergency money for room & board) reg wintertime safety things IN the vehicle with you. You DON'T want to pull off the highway if the visibility is bad because you can so easily get a##ended. You just keep going to the next exit if you feel you can't deal with it & you DEFINITELY don't want to get OUT of the vehicle on the highway to go to the trunk for stuff. The weather can be pretty rugged in the winter so that is a serious concern. Good luck!!

Ok......this is going to be more of an adventure than I first thought I think! You guys have been wonderful with the info! Thanks so much! It sounds like things are going to be a real adjustment, but hey thats part of the fun I guess. I have also heard that Rock Springs is awful for drugs! Is it really any worse than anywhere else right now? I know in St. George the drug business is out of control! Anything else that I need to be worried about let me know please!! Oh yeah....what about schools? Are they pretty good? I'm only going to be needing elementary schools for a few years but just curious anyways?

It's EVERYWHERE. (the drugs.) And very pervasive in the schools, yes. All you can do is the same as anywhere else - know who your kids are hanging out with and what they are doing. Keep tabs on them, do things as a family as much as possible & keep those lines of communication stay wiiiiide open so they feel free to come talk to you about anything, anytime w/o any repercussions.

Try using Craigslist for rentals.....you can search by location and price. Also, many of the ads have pictures of the rentals units. Here is the link.

craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums
