Cheyenne has such a pretty downtown area. (We drove through this past weekend on our way to Ft. Collins.) The capitol building is right there.

The Wheatland Inn is pretty good for home cooked food and friendly service. I hear the same is true of Vimbo's, but I haven't (yet) tried it. Both are on 16th St. in Wheatland, towards the south end of town.
I'll second the wagon ruts on the Oregon Trail up in the Guernsey area. Just follow the North Platte River west from Fort Laramie. The history of the Oregon Trail is one of the neatest things to learn about in the area. This should consume most of the free time you would have on your trip. When you are back in Cheyenne, or before you head out on this day trip, be sure you check out the things in and around there, too. The Union Pacific Railroad operates it's Cheyenne Frontier Days train annually, and pulls it with a beautiful steam locomotive (#844). This link has info about the locomotive:

On the way back from Wheatland. You should stop at Chugwater and get some chili to go. You can heat it up later at the motel. But they are famous for their chili.

My husband likes that chili. He's been looking for it in cans somewhere, so he can buy a bit and keep it on hand at home. We haven't seen it anywhere in cans though. Has anyone?
