I went to Muddy Gap last year. I've travelled the world, but have to admit that although there are only a handful of people living there it is truly on my list of beautiful places. The few people are nice mountain people too. Pure, simple living. You have to admire that:

My dad and I passed through Muddy Gap last year. There is 1 gas station but I didn't see any other businesses. But in the gas station there is a small bookstore so I bought a book. Also, the walls inside the gas station had been signed by thousands of people. It was kinda neat. I was a bit surprised that the gentleman running the business was foreign (Indian, maybe) but he was very pleasant. Just didn't expect to see that way out there.

The scenery/geology of that area is stunning but it truly is out in the middle of nowhere. Bring a camera!

Hope this helps!

Tyster

I like the country. Rode/day worked on an outfit north of there and then got to travel through twice a week when I lived in Casper and worked in Evanston. The highway was closed only once during that winter.

Used to stop at the rest area there across from the DOT facility. Was always a little envious of the people who get to live out there.

BTW, our DOT staff are the best.

I would imagine the only employers there would be the gas station and the DOT. The area around there is beautiful in a rugged way. You might want to take up hunting and get to know some land owners who might let you hunt on their land. Plenty of antelope around there. If you're working for the DOT can you suggest they put a web camera at Muddy Gap. That area is well-traveled and would be nice to have a glance at on the DOT site.
