Our friends in Sheridan are experiencing their first winter there and say it has been very mild. Are there any members who have lived there for 5+ years who give me a better idea of a "brutal" winter (a friend of a friend used that phrase) since we want to move there. We have lived in the mountains of three states and experienced a range of cold weather but nothing below zero. We much prefer cold/snow and would expect it for Jan. and Feb. in Sheridan but just wanted to get feedback on temps from locals. Thank you.

I've lived in Sheridan for 10 years, and to hear the old-timers tell it, there hasn't been a brutal winter for much longer than that. For several years I lived at a location in town where access was via an unplowed alley and parking lot and I never had to shovel snow to get both my front-wheel or rear-wheel cars where they needed to go.

This is a very mild winter with little snow. Last week it was 60 degrees. We had a small storm in November that was gone in a few days. We just received our first real snow last night [about 6" on my car this morning], and the temperatures are expected to be below zero overnight for the next few days.

This is very bad for ranchers. It is considered a severe drought, following the same all last summer.

February has always been a tough month for farmers and ranchers. I distinctly remember one year where it was -25F every night for a week straight. Our cabin was dry and we used an outhouse. The trucks didn't move very far in that windswept area of west central Wyoming.

The coldest weather I've personally experienced in Sheridan was -15 and a whiteout blizzard. It's Wyoming, that can happen.

2-3 years ago we got about 100 inches of snow. Not all at once. The temps fluctuate. That fluctuation really annoys some people. Others say they like having "breaks in the weather."

Some winters we have more subzero temps than others. Some winters the interstate is closed more often than others.

Brutal is really subjective. We're getting 8-10 inches of snow this weekend. Some people like it. Some people hate it.

Weather Underground is predicting that the overnight low for next Friday morning will be -22 degrees. This would be the lowest temperature I've experienced in my 10 years in Sheridan.

Nothing like when I was growing up in northern Maine though. During my high school years, one night it got down to -50 and the following day was it was +50; a 100 degree change in a single day. Another time it was -52. Not the coldest weather I have experienced though. The good news is that when it gets really cold, the wind rarely blows. Twice in northern Maine I've experienced about 30 below with a 30 mph wind. The first time I had to help my father change a flat tire so the family could get home from visiting friends. Even well dressed, we could only work about 30 seconds at a time before having to retreat for warmth.

Very interesting, thank you. Sadly, I had not considered how this all affects ranchers/farmers.

Wow, such a drastic change in temps! Well, weather that much below zero concerns us if there was a medical emergency and first responders being able to get to the patient. Thank you for your response.

Thank you. Here in Prescott AZ we actually had 44" of snow in 3 days. We dealt with it but because we live on a hill in the mts., we needed our driveway to be plowed.
