look into being a railroad cop--that's right a cop. I have a friend and his son-in law is a R.R. Cop who gets paid very well and loves his job.He is also undercover and carries a concealed weapon

That would be ideal , and I have some experience in that area as I worked for 3 years as a peace officer and have some other background in that general area before I became a motorman 2 years ago. I'm going to dig around on the internet and see what I can come up with. Either as a railroad engineer or a railroad cop , both would pay well enough to live a decent life in Wyoming. Again , the question is if anyone is hiring. As for right now nobody is hiring engineers in the country except Amtrak. They pay $19.95/hr. I make $30.07 an hour here in New York as a subway motorman. I'd take the $11/hr pay cut if it the situation was right invloving a move out west since I would assume $20 an hour out there is roughly equal to $30 an hour here. Could be wrong on that though. What I'm not looking to do is take a pay cut here to work for them on the hope I might be able to eventually transfer out there. But where there's a will there's a way so hopefully I'll make something happen in the next couple of years. Thanks for the advice , much appreciated.

I'm surprised BNSF Railway isn't hiring for the coal trains out of the Gillette area. Last year they shipped record tonnage from the Powder River Basin, and while 2009 might be off a little, they're still predicting increases for the coming years.

Not sure about Gillette, but here in Sheridan they increased. But not like you would think. They went from 110 max cars of coal to 128 cars of coal. Unfortunately still the same number of trains and crews. But they're maxed out up here now. They don't have many sidings that they can fit into to pass another train. They'll probably lengthen the sidings so they don't have to hire more engineers.
