Pretty nice job perk, vacationing in Jackson when the summer heat makes it miserable everywhere else.

Next Question: The Wyoming State Capital building was renovated in 1980 at a total cost of $7.6 million. How much did it cost to build it originally?

I loved the 12 cents part...

What was the name of the first naval officer to command a warship named for Wyoming?

Hint: It wasn't the first naval ship named Wyoming.

Wow, the first ship named wyoming was a beauty. That was taking wooden ship building to its extreme limits.

Quote:
The Wyoming was a wooden six-masted schooner, the largest wooden schooner ever built. She was built and completed in 1909 by the firm of Percy & Small in Bath, Maine.[1] The Wyoming was also one of the largest wooden ships ever built, 450 ft (140 m) from jibboom tip to spanker boom tip, and the last six-mast schooner built on the east coast of the US.

Because of the extreme length of the Wyoming and its wood construction, it tended to flex in heavy seas, which would cause the long planks to twist and buckle, thereby allowing sea water to intrude into the hold (see hogging and sagging). The Wyoming had to use pumps to keep its hold relatively free of water. In March 1924, it foundered in heavy seas and sank with the loss of all hands.
The first naval warship was not nearly as pretty, but was probably more seaworthy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Wyoming_(BB-32)

USS Wyoming (BB-32), the lead ship of her class of battleship, was the third ship of the United States Navy named Wyoming, although it was only the second named in honor of the 44th state.

Wyoming was laid down on 9 February 1910 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by William Cramp and Sons. She was launched on 25 May 1911 sponsored by Miss Dorothy Eunice Knight, the daughter of Chief Justice Jesse Knight of the Wyoming Supreme Court, and god-daughter of Wyoming Governor Joseph M. Carey; and commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 25 September 1912, Captain Frederick L. Chapin in command.
She served from 1912 to 1947.

That reference says she was the third Navy ship named Wyoming, so I'm not certain she is the one you are looking for, but she was commanded by Captain Frederick L. Chapin.

Quote:
The first USS Wyoming of the United States Navy was a wooden-hulled screw sloop that fought on the Union side during the American Civil War. Sent to the Pacific Ocean to search for the CSS Alabama, Wyoming eventually came upon the shores of Japan and engaged Japanese land and sea forces. On 16 July 1863, Wyoming won the first-ever United States naval victory over Japan in the Naval battle of Shimonoseki. Commander John K. Mitchell in command.
Quote:
USS Wyoming (BM-10) was the second ship of the United States Navy to bear that name, but the first to bear it in honor of the 44th state. The first Wyoming was named for Wyoming Valley in eastern Pennsylvania. commissioned at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California, on 8 December 1902 with Commander Vincendon Lazarus Cottman in command.

You got it - at the end! What a research project. I thought ElkHunter was going to beat you to it...

The first naval vessel named Wyoming was actually named for the Wyoming Valley - in eastern Pennsylvania. It was the sloop that fought in the Civil War and in Japan.

The first naval ship actually named for the state of Wyoming was indeed BM-10, commanded by Commander Cottman.

Here's the Wikipedia write-up:

USS Wyoming (BM-10) was the second ship of the United States Navy to bear that name, but the first to bear it in honor of the 44th state... The keel of Monitor No. 10 was laid down on 11 April 1898 at San Francisco, California, by the Union Iron Works. She was launched on 8 September 1900 sponsored by Miss Hattie Warren, daughter of Senator Francis E. Warren of Wyoming, and commissioned at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California, on 8 December 1902 with Commander Vincendon Lazarus Cottman in command.

You're up!

Default ??

Wikipedia lists 4 ships named USS Wyoming but does not include the one pictured above.

It also lists a fictional ship with that name.

Are you referring to this picture?

It was not a USS Navy vessel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyoming_(schooner)

Quote:
The ship was named for the state of Wyoming because Wyoming Governor Bryant Butler Brooks was one of the investors in the ship, which cost $175,000 in 1909 dollars. Another Percy & Small built (five-masted) schooner was the Governor Brooks, named after Bryant Butler Brooks himself (1907–1921).
Seems surprising to me that a Wyoming governor had an interest in shipping.
