the record low for the 12th could still fall further today. In addition...the reading of 5 degrees on october 9th marks the earliest in the fall such a low temperature has been reached. The previous earliest date that a low temperature of 5 degrees or colder had been recorded was on the 29th of october 1991 with a low of -4.

the forecast indicates the daily record low maximum for october 12th could be approached today in sheridan. The record for the 12th is 27 and the forecasted high today is 30. The average daily temperature in sheridan through october 11th is 32.3 degrees. This is the coldest start to october ever in sheridan...by an exceptional amount. The previous cold start to the month was an average daily temperature through october 11th of 40.1 degrees in 1985. 2009 has eclipsed this by averaging 7.8 degrees less per day so far!
It feels like the middle of winter LOL I think we are in for a interesting next couple months...

It's 4am and already 44 degrees here at the base of the Big Horns.

Today it's supposed to hit 60 and tomorrow (Saturday) it's supposed to hit 70. Welcome weather after that cold stretch for the last 15 days.

...winter storm warning in effect from 9 pm this evening to 6 pm
mdt thursday...

The national weather service in cheyenne has issued a winter
storm warning for heavy snow and blowing snow...which is in
effect from 9 pm this evening to 6 pm mdt thursday. The winter
storm watch is no longer in effect.

Snow or rain changing to snow will spread over the area tonight.
Snow...heavy at times...will continue wednesday through thursday.
In addition to the snow...north to northeast winds will increase
to 15 to 30 mph late tonight through wednesday night which will
cause widespread blowing and drifting snow and significantly
reduced visibilities.

By thursday evening...snowfall amounts will be from 10 to 15
inches at lower elevations with 15 to 25 inches in the mountains.
Drifts will likely reach a few feet in depth.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A winter storm warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. If you must travel...keep an extra flashlight...food...and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

...a strong winter storm will impact southern and south central
wyoming late this evening through early wednesday evening...

.a potent winter storm will move southward from northern utah
late tonight to near the four corners by wednesday evening. This
winter storm will bring significant snow and gusty northeast wind to southern and portions of south central wyoming late this evening through wednesday afternoon. The exact track of this storm will determine snow amounts and strength and duration of gusty wind...but at this time it appears likely that a combination of snow and wind will create hazardous travel in the i-80 corridor and portions of south central wyoming tonight and wednesday.

...winter storm watch remains in effect from late tonight through
wednesday afternoon...

A winter storm watch remains in effect from late tonight through
wednesday afternoon.

A strong winter storm will move southwest of wyoming late tonight through wednesday afternoon. This storm will have the potential to produce significant snowfall and gusty northeast wind which will result in blowing and drifting snow. This combination of snow and wind will make driving hazardous late tonight through wednesday.
Snowfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches appear likely by late wednesday
with significant blowing and drifting of snow possible. Northeast winds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph will also reduce visibility to near zero at times. People planning travel through natrona county tonight and wednesday are advised to keep up to date on the latest forecasts for this region.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant
snow...sleet...or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.
