My husband and I would like to relocate from FL!! I recently had a phone interview in Lander and would like to know more about the town. My husband and I are also looking into Riverton but we have had a hard time. I am trying to find a rental home, but there are no pics anywhere. From what I have read on other blogs they are not too keen on married couples without kids. We do not have and do not currently WANT kids How is the shopping? Is there at least a Target nearby? I have so many questions and have been surfing the net like crazy but have had bad luck!! Thank you to anyone who can help

I pm'd you. Not much shopping in Lander. The nearest Target is 2.5 hrs away in Casper and Walmart is 30 min away. The rental market is very tight in both lander and riverton.

But both are in a scenic area, and you can see the Rockies from both towns. I think it depends on the type of job.. .say if you're a school teacher and seem to be opposed to kids, then perhaps you'd have some flack. While I had a kid when I lived in Lander, I had plenty of friends who did not. If you like outdoor recreation, such as hiking, mountain climbing, historical site looking, snowmobiling, fishing, etc..there is a lot to offer in the area. Best bet would be to visit the area if you can.. this time of year is a good time to see if you can take the cooler temps!

good luck..there is always Target.com and other online stores. There are plenty of grocery and other stores around. Kmart, Walmart, Pamida (if it's still there) Alco, to name a few. There's even a Walgreens in Riverton.

My Family and I are also moving to WY in the late spring (Or sooner if something Good comes up) and I also posted asking questions about different areas of East WY. I was informed to check and see if I can take the weather. I know I can take it I am hoping the rest of my family will get accustomed to it.
I was likewise informed that online shopping and shipping is the main way alot of rural's get their harder to get items.
Kinda repeated what was posted, but We are also originally from FL so just thought I would try to add and say HI!

Here are some links to both towns. Might pick up some answers to your questions.

Lander

Lander Chamber of Commerce

City Data Demographics of Lander

Riverton

Riverton Chamber of Commerce

City Data Demographics of Riverton

Also, you might think about contacting Realitors because most landlords deal through them so that they can screen, run credit check, etc.

I grew up in Lander, love Lander and Wyoming, had a great Gov. job (working for the library system) that more than paid for my lifestyle, etc.... and moved because of the married without kids thing. 3 years of my best social activities being in other states and none locally drove both my wife and I over the edge to where I quit my job May of this year to move.

If you don't really Want to socialize, or don't mind doing it with the drinking crowd (early-mid 20's typically) of with kids running rampant, then give it a shot. But you'll have less of a support system than I did, less "ins" for non-kid oriented social activities than I did, and be fighting an uphill battle the whole way for anything social. There are probably less than 5 'professional' couples, under 50, without children in Lander.

I'm not trying to dissuade you, just make sure you get the gravity of the situation. Think about spending 360 days a year where your only conversations are work related/at work and with your spouse at home. Knock that down to 300 if you're active church-goers (though most child-free couples I know can't stand the preachy/'better than thou' attitudes of the church when you choose not to procreate).

I live in NE Wyoming and can't be sure about this, but my guess is that couples with kids might find friends more easily, through schools and other youth activities. I doubt it's a matter of people not liking couples without children. At least I've never heard of anything like that, and I've known a lot of childless couples in Wyoming.

When I first became interested in Wyoming, it was because of a job offer to Lander. As it turned out, the job was not vacant so I never got to move there. It's a beautiful area. Lander is smaller than Riverton, but it's at the foot of some great mountains.

Lander is a great town, with limited housing, good resturants, one theater screen, a McDonalds, a Pizza Hut, 3 Asian/Tai/Chineses resturants, great schools, the best pizza in the state (Tony's), a ggreat Elks Club, a lot of bars, no Sam's, no Target, no K-mart, no Walmart, a great Mt Shop (Wild Iris) spectacular climbing, good hunting, hot summers, a crappy 18 hole golf course, a lot of churches, and a lot of unmarried couples.

Riverton has more shopping, less good resturants, good schools but if you are from Lander, you are supposed to hate Riverton.

There are now 3 Indian Casinos in Fremont County. No crap table at the biggest, but black jack, roulette, 3 card poker, and lots of slots. Even some semi big name entertainment.

If you have a job you will find houseing and it wont matter that you don't have kids.

There is a list serve called Lander Talks. It is hosted by the National Outdoor Leadership School, (one of Landers largest employers) Not sure how you get on it but there is always houses for rent.

I have been here 33 years, and have had a great time. It is what you make of it. You will not be discriminated against because you don't have kids. You will unless you get lucky have a hard time getting houseing, but people do it every day.

Jackie,

In my opinion you should thank your lucky stars if you were offered a job in Lander, Wyoming. I graduated from HS there and would not hesitate to move back if I were offered a job in my profession. Lander has one of the most moderate climates in the state, as well as excellent schools and access to some of the best recreational mountain areas you will find.

If I were to recommend a place for someone to move in Wyoming, Lander is at the top of my list. To qualify that I can say I have lived in Lander, Hudson, Riverton, Worland, Casper, Cody, Powell, Laramie, Cheyenne, Rock Springs, Green River, and a few other places while growing up in Wyoming.

Lander is at the top of my list!

Lander is a beautiful place! For sure if shopping matters, you might be disappointed. We make the 2.5 hour trip to Casper once or twice a year to hit Target and other stores, so other than that we shop at Walmart, Kmart, or local stores. Oh, and we do a lot of online shopping. I don't think you will have any issues with discrimination due to no kids- a lot of married couples here don't have any.
