Hey Paintersspouse,

I read tile clarification and have a question.
Quote:
Workers who expect to be in the state only a few months can obtain a temporary worker registration permit for vehicles, not to exceed 120 days, at county treasurer offices for $50 per month.
If a temporary plate is $50 per month, what does Wyoming charge for a plate for a full year?

Harry

License plates are pretty expensive in Wyoming, because plate sales cover personal property tax for individuals. Therefore, charges depend upon the factory price less a deduction for every year for the first 10 years. Plates for my truck, a 2000 F250 4x4 diesel, cost me $197 in September. I think it'll be a little less next year when charges bottom out. Plates for our 5th wheel camper, a 2007 that cost us about $20,000 new, was $190. Plates for a new luxury car or big 4x4 can be quite expensive, but I haven't had one of those for awhile. I'm thinking when my truck was new they cost around $800 per year.

That's offset a little with lower automobile insurance than what you'll find many places. Full coverage ($1M liability, collision and comprehensive) for my truck, camper, and an older Saturn is $125 per month.

Wow, plates in Florida are $38.00 bucks. If I understand you correctly when your truck was new the plate would cost $800 the first year and then a little less each year for 10 years? Almost $8,000.00 in plate fees over a 10 year period of time, is that right?

Well Harry, before you have a heart attack, let's hear from someone else about tag prices. I don't remember half of what I did last week, let alone a decade ago. But yeah, that's what I was thinking -- $800 for the first couple years, then it drops. If I'm remembering it correctly, the total for 10 years would probably be more like $4000-$5000. That was the last new vehicle I purchased, and I'm just not sure about the plate costs. I also got a small discount for many of those years -- for being a vet.

My wife moved here from Oregon. Her plates there cost $40 but were good for two years, and her car was only a year or two old at the time. She about flipped when she first bought Wyoming tags. Add to that the sales tax (that Oregon doesn't have), and she was about ready to move back. But it all evens out. On the whole, Wyoming's taxes are pretty low.

Is there anyplace on line you can go to plug in the car you drive, year etc and find out what the cost of the plate? I read a thread talking about a new Wyoming title and how costly that can be coming from out of state. But an $800.00 license plate sends shivers up your spine. You come to Wyoming with a $900,000.00 Prevost Motor Home you could buy a few new cars for what the plate fee will be. Wow, you have to do a lot of "evening out" to make up for that kind of cost!

Now I guess it's still o.k. for companies like trucking,UPS,some oilfield hauling their own products, etc. And oilfield pickups, all to be "temporary" in the state, even if that trailer or over the road vehicle has been here for years? Oh, it may leave for days or weeks, but it still comes back. I have driven company pickups that were licensed in some obscure part of america, just because of the low tax price, for years.
Now the state of wyoming or county tax man will overlook this, BUT, I its still o.k for the the local cops to still sit outside a gate or private property parking lot of some large employer in wyoming and start writing tickets out for employees that they have pre selected as being here too long and need to get that vehicle licensed. Written up some night when they are getting off work....

Harry,
I'd imagine you could call the county treasurer's office in any county and get the information. For Campbell Co. (Gillette) it's 307-682-7268. Plates should be the same charge in any county.

I currently pay 46$/month to insure my 2000 Saturn car. I can't remember what plates were, but I want to say about the same or less. But Minnesota makes up for it in high taxes on everything else. (property, sales, etc)

Just rec'd the notice for the plates for our 2000 Ford 4x4 pickup. It is just over $100. To us that doesn't seem bad as it was more in Montana. My 2004 Ford Escape was also not much over $100. We have full coverage insurance on both of these vehicles, two fairly new ATV's and an ATV trailer and our monthly insur. premium is $147.00. This is with both of us having clean driving records, average liability, and $500 deductibles on both comp. & collision. Hope this info helps someone out!
