If you choose to go to college later, that is a side benefit as the military will help pay for it plus you can get a VA loan to buy a house in the future.

Sometimes having military on your resume can give you a leg up over someone who just has college on their resume. Employers often look at a person who has been in the military as someone who is well disciplined and knows how to work, especially team work.

Thanks guys, unfortunately though, I have a few health problems that keeps me from joining the military.

I keep going back and forth on whether to go to college or not, but times are uncertain and that load of debt is too much right now. Too much because some of the chemistry jobs are outsourced to India. It's really hard getting a job with a bachelor.

The problem with my major is that it's almost impossible to find a job without a PhD, which is something that's unthinkable right now.
So I'm going to find a job, work for a few years to ride out the depression first and then go back to school.

Might I also suggest any of the oilfield companies (BJ, Schlumberger, Halliburton, etc) in rock springs? The oilfield is starting to move again down here, and most of those companies will hire guys with no experience whatsoever. As a bonus all of them train you to get your CDL, which is incredibly handy once you get a little driving experience.

I thought there was an age limitation that you have to be over 21. If only I can find a phone number to call them directly. This applying online just isn't working. They never email or call back and I wonder if they even receive my application at all.

YOU MUST HAVE PATIENCE YOUNG AUTO. I have been at this for over 8 months and rarely get an email or call. It is called perserverance (sp) and it comes with learning about life. It has taken me 8 months (college educated) to get just 5 face to face interviews. It is hard my friend, and you must be willing to stick it thru. I now have the opportunity to come back home (Wyoming) but it has not been easy. I actually have turned down 2 jobs because in my heart and in much prayer, they have not been right. I need a job, but I will not do a dis-service to GOD, myself, my wife, or a potential employer. Prayer is a very powerful tool and I rely on it alot.

Have you thought about going to a trade school vs. regular university? I have a friend who went to diesel mechanic school, got a great job, and bought his first house at 19. I am sure there will also be help with job placement too.

USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site

Go there, search for jobs at gs-4 or lower, there are plenty of jobs that don't require a college degree.

Here's one: http://jobview.usajobs.gov/GetJob.as...9+03%3a23%3a00

Hey, thanks for all the help guys, but I have decided to go to college for chemical engineering. I really appreciate the advice because it's hard starting out on your own.
It's a risky move but I'm feeling the heat right now trying to find a job with only an AA.
An engineering degree should only take 3 years now, no experience, but maybe with good grades, someone will hire me. Or maybe I'll be one of those unemployed engineers living with their parents.
Life is unpredictable whichever way you go.

Or, you could end up like me. 86 upper level credits. 64 lower level credits. And no degree. I took school because I needed info. Never thought about making it in to something. Only took classes to help me in what I was doing. It worked. I'm now 56 and I'm retired.
