I would look into UP railroad, FMC mine, any energy company. Oil and gas seem to be the way to go around here, Wamsutter is what 60 miles? From Rock Springs. Good oil and gas jobs there. I work out of wamsuter and make enough to leave the wife home to raise the kids.

The oil patch is starting to move again, but I'm not sure how you'd feel about that (I know I'm only 26 and I'd just as soon work at McDonalds as go back into the patch lol).

Asking out of curiousity - what do you dislike about the 'gas patches?' I've heard varying reports that it is very dangerous, but others say that they make great money and like it.

The gas field is not for the meek i know that. I have worked as a pumper for 5 years now and its tough work. Long bad winters, high winds, snowed in roads, and you better keep your wells producing. Fighting freezes and bad weather conditions on a daily basis. Two winters ago i was stuck in a snow bank 3-4 times a day just trying to get to my wells. As far as being dangerous, it can be, training and common sense are huge. It can kill you, but most people who get hurt are not following procedure or using their mellon. I am a high school grad and make 70K out in the field. EXCELLENT benefits, 3 weeks paid vacation, $5000 in bonuses last year. Its not for everyone, some guys just cant hack it, people who make it for a long period of time are some tough SOB's. We are on an 8 on and 6 off schedule. So with vacation, personal and sick time i work half the year. Unless you have a degree in a demanding field, there is not much better than this around here anyways. Like i said its not for everyone.

Greg, Dad said that all he'd heard lately was Rotech Healthcare is looking for a delivery driver (non-commercial). Couldn't find a number for them for you, but if you google them it brings up an online application.

A "pumper" is a production operator. In charge of a route of wells. Production, maintenance, environmental etc. Basically everything to do with the location is your responsibility.

Rya, to answer you question (what it was I disliked about the gas patch), There were several things. Early on in my patch career, I worked for a coil tubing outfit, and I disliked that because of the LOOOOOONG hours (more than once I spent 2-3 weeks where I was working 21-22 hours a day), extreme weather in the winter (I vividly remember one night we were working a pad outside of Big Piney, Wyoming, when the windchill hit 83 BELOW ZERO).
Then I took up hauling diesel and drill pipe into the patch. Not a bad gig in the summer, but in spring, winter and fall, again extreme cold weather, plus, as any oilfield trucker will tell you, after the 6th time in a day you have to throw 200 pounds worth of mud caked tire chains on your truck in shin-deep slop in cold weather, well, you get the picture.....

Greg, have you had any luck? It's been a while since I poked my head in, just wanted to see how it's going.
