I may be wrong about this, but I remember a couple years ago, walking from the Mexican Restaurant to Family Dollar. I found some clues to the identity of the other old stores. I think one was an old CVS drugstore and another was a Grocery store if I remember correctly either a BI-LO or an Ingles.
I've lived in FM since 1980, and the earliest I remember, there was a Revco drugstore, which later became a CVS, and the larger store was a Foodtown, which later was Food Lion.
I cant really see CVS in the huge space... Food Lion seems more like it (as they are in the newer plaza down the road). Maybe CVS was in the Family Dollar? I avoid that plaza, doesnt seem very "desirable".
Looking at the strip center from right to left during the mid 90s, there was Family Dollar, Food Lion, Revco, a dry cleaners, and Papa's Pizza on the left end.
I think there was another business between the cleaners and the Pizza place ... I remember a pawn shop in the shopping strip at one time.
Foodtown was an early name for the Food Lion chain, and the Fort Mill store was store no. 12 in the Food Lion chain (we also had an A&P near downtown).
CVS acquired many of the Revco stores around 1997, and that may have been when the drug store changed names.
On weeknights and weekends, the parking lot of the shopping center could actually get quite crowded, and it was a great place to run into your neighbors and take time out to chat, before picking up some groceries at the Food Lion.
How long has it been since that shopping center was full ? I have lived in FM for almost five years and I only remember Family Dollar being on one side and on the other side a pizza place, now a Mexican restaurant.
I know its not the best part of town, but as fast as FM has been growing, it seems like the owner would put some money into this property in hopes of getting some new tentants.

The Food Lion building has probably been vacant for 20 years or so.
We've been out here since 2001 and I remember the CVS in that plaza. I actually went there a couple of times. It closed soon after and the new one was placed where it stands now on Tom Hall St. I could never figure out why someone put a new plaza along side of the new CVS when it seems to me the old plaza on the opposite side could have been refurbished. It COULD be really nice and REALLY convenient for the folks on Doby's Bridge Road. But the new plaza seems like it's having difficulty obtaining tenants. The Chicken Shak there just closed, which I don't understand because there seemed to be a LOT of cars there all the time.
From someone who just moved here in Feb, I love Fort Mill and feel very safe here, but that small stretch from the traffic light after the CVS to the Shell Oil Change place is just a bit sketchy. I went into that laundromat once, was quite a interesting experience.
One of the reasons you'll sometimes see store space in a shopping center stay vacant is that the previous renter had a long-term, non-cancellable lease, and may be obligated to continue paying rent unless the landlord finds a new tenant.
For instance, Winn-Dixie supermarkets closed its locations in N.C. and S.C. in 2005, and there are still locations sitting idle with the original signage still on the building.
Since this discussion has also included the "new" CVS and the adjoining strip center, picture this ... that corner used to be where the local Ford dealer was located.
