I have been offered a jog in Rock Hill, which is fairly close to Columbia. I would like any ifo possible on the area. Until now I was mostly considering Greenville or Charleston, but this opportunity came along. I have a 10 yr old child, we all love festivals, art related things, music, parks, etc. I would love to live in an area where we can rent a house in a decent neighborhood with sidewalks and my son can ride his bike, meet other kids his age, etc. He has high functioning aspergers, and needs a school where they have different options to choose from. We would like shopping and conveniences, in an area where the crime is not so bad. I appreciate any and all input regarding schools, good neighborhoods, activities, restaurants, etc. Thanks.

Rock Hill is about 70 miles from Columbia. RH is pretty big into family events. There is the spring Come See Me and the Christmasville. There are also events in summer and a farmers markets during the warm months in the downtown, though I haven't been to that so I don't know what it's like. Fort Mill, a neighboring town, has the Strawberry Festival in May. Plus there's always Charlotte and their events. We also have parks as well and Fort Mill has a nice one near their downtown. I have no information about renting a house but I would suggest staying away from the downtown area of RH when it comes to housing. There are some nice condos and apartments near the Manchester Village Area right off Dave Lyle Blvd. As for schools, people usually prefer Fort Mill for that but that isn't to say the schools in RH are bad. However, I'm not a parent so again, I can't say much on that but I have heard that they are actually quite good. There are a lot of conveniences here and plenty of shopping. Pineville, NC is close by and that's where the decent mall is as well as many well known stores. As for crime , RH has some unfortunately, especially as the city grows. That's why I suggested staying away from the older sections near the down town. There are other neighborhoods that I'm sure others can advise you on. In my experience, if you stay close to the sections of town with newer development, both housing and commercial, you should be fine. Many people like some of the surrounding areas due to that as well. I've never had any bad experiences here though and genuinely like it. If you're looking for a more small town feel then again, I would suggest Fort Mill. York is very nice but a little far out , as well as Clover.

Thanks for the reply! How about crime, etc.? Also, is there like a town square of city center sort of thing? Are parts of it more rural than others?

Rock Hill is a great place for families! We are very happy here, and have a 7 and 9 yr old. I kinda like the Baxter area in Fort Mill, and would consider living there if I were coming to the area... Welcome to Baxter Village | Fort Mill SC Master Planned Community

Welcome!

Bill

Crime is pretty non-existant in Fort Mill. Rock Hill has a small percentage. Now on the Charlotte side (i.e. NC), there is lots of crime due to the revolving door trial system. Note in all 3 places crime is nothing like a NY, Miami, Chicago, etc.

Both Fort Mill and Rock Hill have small "town squares". When I say small, I mean one street with a few buildings (none bigger than 2 stories) on side streets. In Rock Hill, not much is down there but a courthouse and a few government offices. All shopping/food is closer to interstate.

Rock Hill has some pretty rural areas. Fort Mill on the other hand does not.

Rock Hill is OK..does not compare to Greenville or Charleston. Fort Mill is a nicer place to live and only 10 minutes or so. R.H. city is trying hard to develop into a nicer place. There are lots of mujsic events downtown at an ampitheater in front of city hall some free, others not. Night life is terrible! Everyone goes to charlotte. There is an active Arts Council that has regular exhibits, summer camps etc. downtown charlotte is approx. 25-30 minutes. Lake Wylie borders city limits. There are trails along the catawba river which is undergoing major development including the largest businees park?(300 acres) in the carolinas, mixed use live/work type place and a "veladrome" indoor bicycle park that is largest in the south east.. There are a couple parks, manchester and cherry and several other smaller parks. One revolves around baseball, the other soccer. winthrop University has a lot of influence and an excellent music program which puts on concerts, jazz ensembles etc.... Its really a kind of middle of the road type of place. Its not bad for a quite family life.
