Since Wachovia is officially changing to Wells Fargo soon, I have been looking into credit unions. I live in Fort Mill (York Country) and work in Charlotte. Are there any credit unions that are recommended? Any I should just stay away from?
There are three close to me: Founders, 1st Patriot, Family Trust (still under construction). If anyone has any positive or negative feedback on any or all of these, that would be great!!
I just opened up an account with Family Trust (Clover). So far, I am having a great experience with them. They have great customer service and they were able to re-finance my husbands' motorcycle when all other banks were not doing it anymore. The biggest drawback (for me, at least) - is their hours...but then again...everything has crappy hours out here. They work the regular 9-5 hours that I do..so I've never had the chance to go there in person. I've done everything online or over the phone.
I am in the same predicament - I wanna switch out of Wells Fargo. I have a friend who uses 1st Patriot and they love it. They say they are very friendly, etc. This is the location in Fort Mill. I am going there this week to apply for a savings and checking account.

I created an account for my niece at Family Trust. As samana said, the customer service is good. If you have kids, they give them $1 for every A on their report card if you bring it in. I've thought about switching banks too and may make the switch myself soon.
I always like the way Founders landscapes their property. Not a deciding factor, but I personally would give them my business for making the community look good. If you contact them, let me know if you only need to be a resident of Fort Mill. They are right down the road from me and am ready to switch from BOA myself.
Definitely go with Founders. If for no other reason than they have many more Branch and ATM locations than Family Trust or 1st Patriots. Founders covers most of the Upstate along with a branch in Charlotte. Founders and 1st Patriots only have a small handful of branches. I have been with Founders for several years and have found they seem to have the lowest rates, best service and most hassle-free lending service.
