My husband is receiving a job transfer to Pineville, NC. We have the option of finding a home in NC or Fort Mill, SC area. We plan to visit the area for the 1st time in the next month or so but would appreciate any recommendations/opinions to help us get started.

We've discovered that taxes are lower in SC. I've heard that there are great schools in both areas. Someone pointed out that by living in NC we would receive in state tuition to colleges.

For those of you that work in NC and live in SC, can you tell me what made you decide to live in SC over NC? Appreciate your thoughts!

one word, TAXES. Taxes in general are cheaper (except auto), gas is cheaper, close enough to downtown Charlotte without having to deal with the inner city traffic and taxes. i actually live in ft mill (Walden park to be exact) and i love it. i built in '08 and i dont regret it one bit. Good luck on your transfer and decision making.

We just moved to Fort Mill the first of year and chose this area because of the cheaper taxes and #1 school district. I thought about the college issue before moving here because my oldest is a sophomore in high school, but we plan to go the tech school route for core classes because it's more affordable and then transfer those credits to whereever he chooses to finish up. I don't know where that will be (where he will transfer to), but that's at least 4 years away and who knows what will be going on at that point. I've learned plans are made to be broken. lol If you choose to live in NC, you will have to do some research on schools because there's good and bad within that area, but Fort Mill schools are all good. My kids adapted to their new schools very quickly and actually like it here better than their old schools.

Fort Mill is great!!!! All the access of the big city of Charlotte, but a bit more relaxed and living expenses are much less. Public schools are much better too. Pineville would be about 12-15 minutes depending on where in Fort Mill you are looking. I work in Ballantyne and it's about a 25 minute drive, and I don't have to take the interstate. Once you learn the back roads, you won't want to take them anyway. I have a townhome for rent if you are thinking about finding a place to learn the area for a bit first. Let me know if you'd like a link for the listing.

We came across to Fort Mill for all the below reasons...
1) Taxes - property for instance (compared to Mecklenburg) is about half
2) Love the community feel. Check out Baxter Village.
3) Closeness to everything for day-to-day stuff. Tons of grocery options (including one of the first Publix in the metro). Rivergate shopping (Target, Best Buy, Home Depot, Old Navy, etc). Easy access on I-77 to downtown.
4) Fort Mill School District was good. Icing on the cake.

Only draw I see/saw was the in-state college deal for UNC. If you child chooses out of state, well then it didn't matter either way.

I read your post my husband and I are interested in a rental until we get to know the area. We are relocating from Anderson area. We haven't rented in thirty years and have found it difficult to decide where we want to live. If your still interested in renting please email

I would definitely choose Fort Mill schools over Pineville schools, plus there seem to be more housing options in Fort Mill than Pineville.

South Carolina also has good in-state tuitions. Both USC and Clemson have really made a push in recent years to attract more top-notch students. Both schools have an honors college where the students live in a dorm together and have separate professors from the rest of the school. I believe many of these students are on full/near full scholarship. This is word-of-mouth info I've heard from other parents- so someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Need to find the time to research it myself since my oldest is now in high school!

My daughter takes piano from Laurian at the Playroom Academy of Music in Baxter and LOVES her (I do too!) They are a little more expensive than some other places, but my daughter works really hard at it so I don't mind spending the money. They also video tape the lessons and your child can long onto the video from a computer and watch the lesson. They say this helps a student to advance more rapidly, but I don't think my daughter ever watches her videos.

Good luck with your decision.
