Weather is warming up and this transplant from MD is craving some crabs. Has anyone seen anyone selling live blue crabs?

You may start seeing some people on the side of the road selling Shrimp. Some of these people have blue crabs this time of year. As temperatures rise in March and April, Blue Crab catch rates in South Carolina grow pretty good.

Hey there McDades ... it might be a tad to early for crabs.

I am a native here and when my husband was in the military I joined him (Vietnam era long ago.) We were stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and lived in Havre De Grace. A neighbor and native of MD took us across the Susquehanna and to this place to eat outdoors. Picnic tables covered with newspaper under a shelter and guys with these big metal drums cooking. We sat down at a picnic table and a guy brings two baskets of crabs and dumps them on the table ... he reaches into his apron and gives us these little hammers.

Dumbfounded I just stare at this pile of critters on the table ... I had eaten crab cakes, deviled crabs, crab salad but never been confronted with a big pile and my little hammer. Friends that brought us starting digging in ... as hubby and I just sat there and stared. All around us the picnic tables were full of people with their little hammers going to work on the crabs. It was a new experience for us and one I have never forgotten.

We order our seafood (Blue crabs and more) online from the Blue Crab Trading Company. Everything is delivered fresh to your door. You can order live or frozen blue crabs by the dozen or bushels. They also include the mallets, utensils and a brown wrapping paper to cover your table. Sign up for the coupons at the top of their website and get access to their specials (some even include free shipping).
