Because of financial reasons and a pretty bad job market, I have to move out of Los Angeles after three years and in with my family, who just moved to Edgemoor in November (from the Washington, D.C., suburbs). Am staying there temporarily until I land a job elsewhere in SC or NC. (Not sure if it matters, but my background is communications/media/hospitality.)

Mom lives out on a farm in the middle of nowhere, living out her retirement bliss. Any ideas about how a young'un like me can meet people or get involved in the community? Just looking for ways to break up the days spent job-hunting. Thanks in advance, everyone.

Stay away from Chester and Lancaster! Drive to Columbia or Rock Hill. Rock Hill has lots of city parks and rec. Church is the best place around here to meet people and get involved. Try different ones until you get it right. We have lots of them.

It could be a culture shock for someone used to Los Angeles. I'm from Lancaster myself and after living in Columbia for six years, it's hard for me to go back to visit family sometimes just because of the shock. A little bit of culture shock as well as backwood shock and small town shock, not that Columbia is a big city, obviously. I'm not a huge fan of Rock Hill either, having worked at a small TV station there from 2002 to 2006. So I guess Columbia and Charlotte are your best options. Both are about the same distances from Edgemoor. Charlotte has worse traffic. I prefer Columbia but my wife and I would like to move slewhere soon.

Good luck. Edgemoor doesn't even have a traffic light.
