Yes - and it's unfortunate in some ways; for Charlotte's "big city" thinking has, to some degree, taken away from the small town, southern hospitality, atmosphere.

It is rather a Catch-22

These towns/cities were all self sufficient until the textile industry was sent overseas.

It is now only the locations that are in close proximity to where the work is (Charlotte) that there is growth.

One can drive in any direction and if it is not within what most people consider an exceptable commute to work, then it becomes very clear how these towns have suffered.
