My wife and I are purchasing a new townhome in baxter village. Do people typically get real estate attorneys to look over the contracts prior to signing here on new construction? In NY, we typically do, but then again there isn't much new construction on Long Island.

Your realtor should review the contract with you. Usually builders have standard contracts, and make sure you understand everything you are agreeing to. We also relocated from NY, and it is very different here -- usually only one attorney involved. In resales, the buyer usually chooses the attorney, but for new construction it is usually the builder's attorney (which the buyer pays for)

That being said, realtors are not attorneys, so if you feel comfortable having an attorney look at it, you should before you sign. I know there are some builders that limit what changes they would even consider to their standard contract, so that might be something you'd want to ask the builder.

If you need an attorney, John Peterson is located right in Baxter above Beef O'Brady's. He's handled both of our SC closings, and has done a great job.
