I've been following the news of the new Hard Rock / Catawba Indian casino for a few weeks. They are still trying to get the go ahead from congress or something? I live in Spartanburg , but would come here instead of the one in North Carolina thats 2 hours away . Has anyone heard much else about it or seen the area where its suppose to be developed? I know talks have been in the works for years and they have the money , just waiting on an O.K from someone .

Last I knew it wasn't allowed as they used up their allotment by doing the Bingo in Rock Hill and congress would have to change the ruling or law to allow a casino to go there.

The Catawba Nation screwed up back in 1993 by not going the casino route. Instead they purchased the old Rock Hill Mall on Cherry Road and opened the high stakes Bingo place. It failed and they sold the mall. Once again, recently, they tried the high stakes Bingo and again it failed and closed this year. Long ago they also tried Bingo near Myrtle Beach and it failed.

Four years ago the Catawba Nation petitioned the feds to open a casino in Cleveland County NC (off I-85 near Kings Mountain.) South Carolina law will not permit casinos on our sacred soil.

The petition is in limbo now. North Carolina has received some opposition from the NC Politicians due to the Cherokee Nation's Harrah's casinos. The Cherokee's have donated big campaign contributions to the NC politicians. I assume since the $32 million trust in the 1993 land settlement act is held by the Feds so it will be up to them not the local politicians.

Most recent news was in the Shelby Star

The Shelby Star has the most information about the proposed casino. It listed the names of the politicians in Raleigh who have taken campaign donations to protect their casinos.

Who told you that the Kings Mountain casino would be 2 hours away? It would be at exit 5 of I 85. That's 40 miles from Spartanburg. They've had the land for years. It's the SW corner of exit 5, diagonally across from the natural gas power plant that NTE is building.

Get your friends to write to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in favor of the casino, if you want it to come.

The proposed casino is just outside of Kings Mountain.

Reread what the post said. The CURRENT casino is 2 hours away from the original poster. He or she is NOT referring to how far away the new one would be.

Not far for most of us compared to driving to Cherokee. The Catawba Tribe had to get over the SC line and they managed that well.

In 1993 Chief Gilbert Blue and the tribe council with help from John Spratt should have pushed somehow to have a casino on the reservation. The Catawba Indian Nation is a federally recognized nation unto itself, sovereign, self-determining and self-governing.

Cleveland, Gaston, & Mecklenburg are tribal service areas, so they can buy land in the tribal service areas & ask for it to be classified as tribal land & ask for permission to have the casino.
