Hello. In the throws and planning a move to the area and currently deciding between SC/NC, closer to city or more rural, etc. Previous threads are answering many of my questions, but I would like to know more about recreational use of the Catawba. Is this a river where people can just throw in a kayak and explore, swim, play on rocks/sandy areas? Any public parks that feature walking trails near it? Any neighborhoods offer direct access as an amenity (I have heard of River Walk, but are there any on the Fort Mill side?). Thanks!

Tega Cay has sandy beaches at Windjammer Park on the peninsula and a good place to drop a kayak in is at the park off new gray rock rd just south of the dam on lake Wylie.

Masons Bend will have access. Also there is a public launch site at the base of the dam off new grey rock.

In Rock Hill there is Ebenezer Park (York County) and River Park (Rock Hill). There is a boat ramp off Dam Rd (off Sutton Rd).
