Hello. My family and I are moving in the new year to/around the Charlotte, NC area. We have a 4yr old high functioning autistic son. I heard that public schools are better in SC than NC and so we were thinking of looking in the Fort Mill or Rock Hill or Indian Land area.

Does anyone have any experience with the special education programs for these areas? Pros? Cons? What elementary school would be best to start with?

Thanks for your feedback!

I have no direct knowledge of Rock Hill special programs but you can start here (and contact them):

Wherever you end up, know your rights and the laws that need to be followed. Because Fort Mill is growing so fast, many of our elementary schools are completely overwhelmed by the number of IEP's and services they must provide and if the parent isn't nudging the services along, they may not be enforced. Good luck to you wherever you end up.

We moved to Fort Mill this past June and my son has an IEP also and attends Springfield Elementary. They’re doing a great job with him. I don’t know much about Indian Land Special Education.. but when I contacted Rock Hill before moving here they told me they didn’t have integrated special education classes. They had special education with the mainstream kids and just did pull outs throughout the day. Good luck!
