Does anyone know if you buy a car in Charlotte, do you have to pay sales tax in NC or SC? And is there a capped amt?

We're SC residents. I've tried scouring DMV website, but just can't find the info I need.

Any info you have is appreciated!

Michelle

I bought a new car in Charlotte in June (and live in SC) and was pleasantly surprised to only pay (I think) $300 in sales tax (I assume it went to NC)! My papers are buried or I would go look it up. I am used to paying thousands of dollars for sales tax on a vehicle in the north. BUT, remember that we pay the vehicle property tax each year here in SC and I would imagine that by the end, we will have paid thousands of dollars on the car. I paid over $500 last year!

I hope this helps!

You will pay $300 in sales tax then get a bill in the mail for personal property tax which is tied to the value of your car. They give you a few months to pay that tax. Use the millage rate. The property tax drops as the car depreciates.

For a 28,000 car last year I paid around $600 in personal property tax, just got my tax bill for this year and it is $500.

You can call the assessors office and they will tell you.

From the website

We have a manual provided to us by the Department of Revenue that shows the value of all vehicles. We can give you an estimate from our manual by phone, fax, or e-mail. If you want to figure an estimated amount yourself, take the market value (before any rebates, allowances, or trade ins) and multiply that by 7.50% if the vehicle will be in your personal name or by 10.50% if the vehicle will be in a business name. After you have done that, you will multiply your answer by the tax rate of the district you live in. We can give you the tax rate if you tell us what your address is or you can find it on any of your tax bills for the current year. If you need an exact amount, you will need to fax, e-mail, or come in and bring a title or bill of sale.
