My husband and I make pretty close to the same amount of money every year. I work in SC, he works in NC. We both claim M with 0 dependents for state tax purposes (not for federal though). This is just to make sure we have enough taxes taken out. He is taxed in NC at 4 times what I am taxed in SC. The only difference is I work for the state, he works for the private sector. Not sure that makes any difference.

Statistically...
SC has an 8.4% rate vs a $32,000 income; net @ $29,600
NC has a 9.9% rate vs a $35,000 income; net @ $31,500
New York (#1) has a 12.8% rate vs a $49,000 income; net @ $42,200
