It is a long way but maybe you could turn it into a mini vacation. We just went to Charleston for the first time ever and someone suggested we go to James Island Cpunty Park festival of lights Charleston County Parks and Recreation - Holiday Festival of Lights . It was the best light display I have ever been to. It tops Longwood Gardens in PA which is pretty spectacular. The display is both drive thru and they have a walk thru area. A little shopping village where you can get treats or catch a train ride tour. I think we paid $10 per car so with a family of 6 it was a great deal.

Riverbanks Zoo in COlumbia does an awesome set-up. Also Tanglewood up by Winston is good. We enjoy cruising neighborhoods and seeing what people do. Check Legacy park and there is some good ones blackhorse run.

Maybe people are finally realizing it's not a good idea for the planet or the pocketbook to be burning energy for frivolous reasons.

Maybe not.

The long lines at McAdenville would beg to differ...

The pocketbook, maybe. But Christmas lights have been making people happy for a long time.

We compromised this year. When we got to McAdenville this year, we parked the car and walked through town.

There were 4 homes mentioned in the Carolina Gateway newspaper (Indian Land) for their respective Christmas light displays ... two in Legacy Park, one off Hwy 75 near the N.C./S.C. stateline, and one near the back entrace to Bridgehampton (off Harrisburg Road).

We enjoyed the last of the displays the best, although some might find it "overdone."

While up by Ardrey Kell Road, we also went to see the Cook family lights ... about a minute from the intersection of Ardrey Kell and Marvin Road. They have set up a special light display for several years that is computer-syncronized to Christmas music broadcast on a low-power transmitter on 100.3 MHz.

This was the highlight of our drive-around the other night !

Mr. Cook does these displays to help raise money for charities. Last year, it was Victory Junction: Victory Junction

This year, the beneficiary is A Child's Place, which is a local organization: Homepage

Donations are voluntary ... there is a bucket at the end of the driveway, and Mr. Cook is often out-an-about. He is also glad to talk to people who stop to view the display.

If you go to enjoy the lights and music, each show lasts about 18 minutes, followed by a brief intermission. The home sits on a corner, so there are good places to park and view the show on both the main and intersecting street. Don't forget to put the radio on in your car to hear the music !
