If you’re going to get sick, Indianapolis is a good place to do it. Everyone knows that Indianapolis is the heart of motor sports, but the city is also a leading center for the health care industry. Metro Indianapolis has an abundance of quality hospitals, including teaching hospitals and those with state-of-the-art and specialized facilities. There are 404 physicians per 100,000 residents in Indianapolis, compared to the U.S. average of 170.
On the business side of the ledger, health care plays an important role in Indianapolis. Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company has its world headquarters in Indy. The company was founded in Indianapolis in May 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly, a 38-year-old pharmaceutical chemist and Civil War veteran. He saw firsthand the bloody casualties of war and was frustrated by the poorly prepared and often ineffective medicines of his day. His goal was to found a company that manufactured pharmaceutical products of the highest possible quality, based on the best science of the day, and to develop medicine that would be dispensed by physicians rather than by quick-talking sideshow hucksters.
Lilly’s business flourished but he still wasn’t satisfied with traditional methods of testing the quality of his products. Instead, Lilly hired a young chemist in 1886 and established his own basis and techniques for quality evaluation. Eventually, the company expanded to include the discovery and development of new and better pharmaceutics. Over the years, Lilly’s son and his two grandsons each served as president of the company.
Today, Eli Lilly and Company is a major employer and contributor to the welfare of Indianapolis. From the original shop where Lilly, his 14-year-old son, Josiah, and another employee were the only workers, Eli Lilly and Company has grown to have almost 39,140 employees worldwide. Lilly is consistently ranked as one of the most charitable companies in the world, and the Lilly Foundation, which is made possible by donations from Eli Lilly and Company, is an important source of this charitable work. In its last annual report, the Foundation donated more than $29 million to charities.

Description: Opened in 1985, Community Hospital North started with a 100-bed, acute-care inpatient capacity, emergency department, inpatient and outpatient surgery, and support services.Since then, the hospital has more than doubled in size, with 282 private patient guest suites, the largest collection of private labor and delivery suites (60 beds) in the country, a neonatal intensive care unit with private rooms, and 48 private inpatient surgical-care suites on the second floor. A new five-story professional office building is connected to the hospital and a new six-story parking tower.

Description: Opened in Dec 2002 as the Heart Center of Indiana, the facility was one of the nation’s first freestanding heart-specialty hospitals and the first in the Indianapolis area.
