Description: Willowdale is sandwiched between the horses and huff of Scarborough Downs harness-racing track and the salt marsh and seabirds of pretty Scarborough Marsh. And in the case of the latter, Greater Portland’s big, beautiful estuary, that’s not a bad thing. The front nine holes are open, the back nine are hugged by trees, and water separates the two but only comes into play on two holes. Because of the marsh, the par 71 course is among the most attractive in the area. The club is big on tournaments, so, depending upon when you visit, you can try your hand. There are plenty of amenities, from the modern clubhouse to the practice greens, rentals, snack bar, and lounge, and if you don’t find what you want in the pro shop, you can always skip over to the Maine Mall, which is just minutes down the road. Tee times are recommended on the weekends.
