Description: Operated by Duke Energy and located at the McGuire Nuclear Station on Lake Norman, this energy information center offers hands-on exhibits of model nuclear and coal-fired power plants and a film entitled Lake Norman—the Great Inland Sea. You can walk through the wildflower garden, travel the 1-mile nature trail, and enjoy a picnic lunch. EnergyExplorium is accessible via boat and car and is open six days a week year round, except for New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas. Hours are 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Mon through Fri, and noon until 5 p.m. Sat. Inquire about tours for McGuire’s Control Room Simulator. Free.

Description: The oldest standing store in the state, this restored 18th-century Federal house and log store is open the second Sun of the month June through Sept. Tours are offered from 2 to 5 p.m. Group tours by appointment. Cost is $3 for adults, and $2 for children (age 6–13).

5. Latta Plantation

Description: This early-1800s river plantation was owned by James Latta, a prosperous traveling merchant who bought wares in Charleston and Philadelphia and peddled them to his Carolina Piedmont neighbors. Costumed guides give tours of the two-story house, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, and demonstrate weaving, spinning, sewing, woodworking, and open-hearth cooking. The plantation comes complete with farm animals and a unique equestrian center.Open 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tues through Sat and 1 until 5 p.m. Sun. Call for guided tour times. Description: One of the most popular places in town to cool off is this $8.5-million facility at Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics. Standard swimming pools seem boring after kids dive into the Fun Pool’s interactive water activities—spraying water spouts, a playground in the middle of the shallow pool, waterfalls, tubes, slides, and, best of all, water cannons that douse those who dare to step too close. Indoor swimming lessons also available for kids. Hours and days vary based on the season.
