Description: Kitty Hawk Kites, the country’s most popular hang-gliding school, offers various ways to learn how to fly. The company’s headquarters, in Nags Head across from Jockey’s Ridge State Park, faces the main training site on the largest sand dune in the East. Here learn to fly solo 5 to 15 feet over the soft, forgiving sand, or soar through the clouds at altitudes up to 2,000 feet with an instructor. Either method, offered at various locations along the Outer Banks, is an exhilarating experience you’ll never forget and undoubtedly will return home to brag about. If hang gliding has kindled your desire to fly, Kitty Hawk Kites can also help you train to become a certified pilot. A number of packages are designed to help you achieve your goal. This school, the world’s largest, has taught more than 250,000 students to fly since 1974. No experience is necessary, and there are no age limitations. As long as you weigh within the parameters, you can fly! Tandem hang-gliding instruction is offered at the Currituck Airport. There are no age restrictions and no minimum weight requirement for tandem instruction, which is also accessible to the disabled. Kitty Hawk Kites offers two methods of instruction—by plane or boat. Reservations are required for most recreation, so be sure to call ahead. Discount packages are available.
