Description: This soundfront campground is open year-round for recreational vehicles and tents. Sail-boarders and kiteboarders especially enjoy this campground because they can sail right to some of the campsites. Other campers enjoy swimming, boating, and fishing in the sound. The water sports business next door rents kayaks, sailboats, Wave­Runners, surfboards, and bicycles. But what really keeps campers coming back are the spectacular, unobstructed sunset views. Hot showers, picnic tables, and a few grills are on-site. If you’d rather not cook, you can grab a pizza from Lisa’s Pizzeria right next door. Pets are allowed. Reservations are recommended. Personal checks and credit cards are accepted. Call for nightly rates. When you pay for six nights, the seventh night is free.

Description: In the village of Rodanthe, North Beach Campground sits alongside the ocean south of the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station. Here 110 sites, all with water and electric hookups, offer campers both tent and RV accommodations and a wide range of amenities. Bathhouse, hot showers, picnic tables, a laundry facility, an outdoor swimming pool, and a pump-out station are available. There aren’t any grills here, and open fires aren’t allowed, so bring your own grill or camp stove if you want to cook. North Beach Campground’s grocery store sells fuel and convenience-store items. Pets are allowed on leashes. Reservations are accepted. The campground is open from Mar through Nov.

Description: This sound-to-sea amusement area offers the biggest selection of go-kart tracks on the Outer Banks—and more recreational opportunities in a single spot than anywhere else on Hatteras Island. Here kids of all ages enjoy seven separate race car tracks where drivers test their skills on a different style of vehicle at each pit stop. Wet racers are great for hot afternoon sprints against the wind—and other boaters. Bumper boats, two minigolf courses, waterslides, and a snack bar also are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily May through Oct.

Description: Rodanthe Surf Shop owners Randy Hall and Debbie Bell moved to the southern Outer Banks to surf, and the shop evolved naturally from their lifestyle. A hands-on, no-frills operation, the shop sells only the boards it makes, Hatteras Glass Surfboards, along with surfing equipment and surfer lifestyle clothing. Get a true surfing experience by renting a real fiberglass board here. The shop is closed Thanksgiving through Mar.

Description: This huge retail store offers everything you need for kiteboarding. There is ample space to set up, and pros are on hand to help you with your skills. Enthusiasts can rent before buying gear. Warm showers and a restaurant are also on the premises.

10. Hatteras Island Fishing Pier

Description: After massive poundings by Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd, this pier collapsed in 1999. Even the land on which the pier house stood disappeared due to storm erosion. The land was refilled and in 2000 the pier reopened, a little farther back from its original location. The pier house sells drinks, snacks, sandwiches, tackle, and bait. The pier and pier house are open every day in the summer, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. the rest of the season. The Rodanthe pier is closed Jan 1 through Apr 1.
