Description: One day a year, Lincolnites become more Czech than Nebraskan. During the annual Lincoln Czech Fest, thousands of people gather for kolache and other baked goods, sauerkraut, hot dumplings, and sausage. The free festival’s main stage has a slew of acts that fill the day: accordion music, dancers, and the crème de la crème: live polka music. Throughout the day “Czech Royalty” is crowned, with the big moment being the crowning of the Lincoln Czech Queen. Don’t miss it for all the pomp and circumstance you can take while munching a kolache.

Description: Centrally located in Lincoln’s scenic College View neighborhood, Union College is a ­Seventh-day Adventist campus with programs focused on the health care industry. The 50-acre campus is tree lined and beautiful, and a small business district across the street includes many popular student hangouts. Its programs are top rated: In 2008, 100 percent of its pre-med graduates got accepted to medical school. Volunteerism and service learning is a focus, and many of Union’s students practice medicine abroad for those in need while also working as student missionaries. Union offers a bachelors and associates degree, as well as a Master of Physician Assistant Studies; the school offers more than 50 majors and minors in close to 30 areas.

Description: The state’s second largest school district, Lincoln Public Schools has been growing quickly over the past few years in number of students, academic offerings, and school standards. LPS high schools offer a number of singular programs, including an International Baccalaureate Program; a number of school-to-career programs; alternative classrooms; and programs specially focused on science, humanities, information technology, and other entrepreneurship opportunities.Younger students can take advantage of all-day kindergarten, and LPS also has an English language learner program as well as a gifted program and a special education program.The district has a strong focus on both the core subjects and the humanities; a strong athletic program and after school activities round out LPS offerings.

5. St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center

Description: St. Elizabeth’s is Lincoln’s first hospital. Nearly 300 beds and an environment that encourages spirituality and healing has helped it continue to be one of the city’s two main venues for health care. St. Elizabeth’s has a network of family practice and internal medicine clinics, including three stand alone urgent care centers and two physical therapy clinics. Home care and hospice services, a nationally recognized burn center, a cardiovascular rehabilitation center, radiology and angiography services, and a wellness center are all on the docket at St. E’s. The hospital is currently undergoing a three-year expansion plan that includes a full remodel and expansion in the West tower.

Description: The capital city’s daily newspaper, the Journal Star came into being when the two major dailies—the Lincoln Journal and the Lincoln Star—merged in 1995. Its circulation now is close to 80,000 and it circulates in a number of surrounding southeast Nebraska towns.
