Description: Like its sister center in Reno, the Sparks Senior Center is a beehive of activity. Regular events include arts and crafts, card games, pool and billiards, exercise classes, and dancing. Many of the same programs that are offered at the Reno facility are also available here (see the description below). Lunch is served weekdays at 11:30 a.m., and reservations must be made by 9:30 a.m. the same day in order to eat. The center doesn’t provide transportation, but it’s easily reached by Citifare bus. The hours for this comfortable, modern facility are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays.

Description: You can profoundly enrich your life as well as that of your foster grandchild in the Foster Grandparent Program. Volunteers provide one-on-one daily attention to at-risk youth in schools, hospitals, drug treatment centers, day-care centers, and correctional institutions. You can apply if you’re age 60 or older, love children, meet certain income requirements, and can volunteer 20 hours a week. Benefits include a small stipend, reimbursement of expenses, insurance, and an annual physical.

Description: Many older persons delay or avoid living in nursing homes by using help provided by volunteers in the Senior Companion Program. Volunteers provide assistance to frail seniors by providing transportation, escorting seniors to doctor’s appointments, running errands, and simply being a friend. Volunteers are reimbursed for their expenses and receive insurance and an annual physical as a benefit. To qualify for volunteering, you must meet certain age and income requirements and agree to work 20 hours a week.
