Description: This 6,000-square foot museum, which opened in 1970, traces the history of African Americans on Long Island, and is the only one of its kind in the area. Some of the exhibits come from the Smithsonian Institute. One of the more recent exhibits showcased prominent living or recently deceased African Americans who have earned national or international fame or recognition for their accomplishments in a wide range of areas—from sports and music to art and industry. The goal of this museum is to foster a better understanding of the contribution and influence the local African-American population has had, and continues to have, on American culture. In addition to its exhibits, the African-American Museum regularly hosts lectures and workshops covering a wide range of topics. It is open Tues through Sat from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
