Most area attractions offer special admission pricing, and many local restaurants also discount meals for seniors. In this area age is something to be respected, and elderly wisdom is passed along and cherished. A good number of resident seniors were not born in the area. They decided to relocate here for sundry reasons, with the area’s beauty, relaxed pace, and wealth of history being three main incentives. Many seniors spend the majority of their time studying the battlefield and the Civil War at their leisure. Recreational opportunities are plentiful around Gettysburg, and active seniors can spend their days golfing, horseback riding, and fishing (see the Recreation chapter). Activity for the mind can be found at the area colleges and the elderhostel program held here that studies the Battle of Gettysburg (see the Education and Child Care chapter).
If you’re in the area long enough, you’re bound to see the buses of the Adams County Transit Authority on the roads, dropping off and picking up seniors as they go about their daily lives. This is just one of the many low- or no-cost programs available to seniors, and the Adams County Office for Aging runs a dynamic agency that can give you all kinds of information on senior programs and senior-related issues. This agency also runs the area senior centers, where seniors can always find companionship and activities.
The Gettysburg area also boasts numerous retirement communities and nursing homes, and many have a range of options to suit each person’s independence level. In short, there’s plenty here to occupy your time and keep you engaged in the community, and support systems are in place to help you deal with the health issues that come along with age.
