Description: William Penn was able to live in his dream home, a 3-story brick manor home he had built on 40 acres on the Delaware River 26 miles north of Philadelphia, for 2 years between 1699 and 1701. His wife, Hannah, gave birth to their only American child here. After Penn’s death, the house fell into ruin, but between 1933 and 1942 it was reconstructed on its original foundations. Today, you can tour the home, authentically furnished with 17th-century antiques, Penn’s herb garden, and several outbuildings including a woodworking shop and bake and brew house where open-hearth cooking demonstrations are held. The resident horses, oxen, sheep, peacocks, and other animals complete the idyllic ambience of Penn’s “country” retreat.
