Description: Played on the home course of the late, great Ben Hogan, this invitational tournament began in 1946 and remains one of the fine smaller tournaments on the PGA tour. Winners through the years have included Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer. Tickets are expensive but crowds love the golf, the skimpy clothing seen in the gallery, and the margaritas that help ward off the late-May heat.

Description: The Stockyards Championship Rodeo takes place every Friday and Saturday night at 8 in a rodeo venue built in 1908. It’s been air-conditioned in recent years, but the coliseum still offers a yesteryear feel. A bonus is Pawnee Bill’s Wild West Show, an authentic reenactment of the original show, offering trick roping, trick shooting, trick riding, and cowboy songs. Tickets are moderately priced.

Description: Formally known as the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, this may be the single biggest excitement in Cowtown during the winter. Nightly rodeo action brings the toughest bull riders, bronc riders, and steer-wrestling cowboys to town.

5. Cowtown Marathon

Description: Running enthusiasts just call it “the Cowtown,” and since its founding in 1979, it’s become exceptionally popular. Entries for the 50K (yes, people actually run that far), full marathon, half-marathon, 10K, and 5K total about 18,000 runners, who gather for the annual race on the last Saturday in February.
