Description: U.S. National Champion and World Bronze Medalist Michael Weiss has trained at this popular indoor skating facility. Call for a schedule of public skating, offered daily at varying times. Open for more than 30 years, the arena offers private and group lessons for all skill levels, holds an annual competition, and occasionally hosts ice shows. Weiss’s former coach, Audrey Weisiger, named 1999 Coach of the Year by the United States Figure Skating Association, is a staff member. An in-house adult ice-hockey league plays fall/winter and spring/summer seasons. The Skating Club of Northern Virginia, an organization for competitive skaters, practices here.

Description: The department sponsors 21 parks, including the 48-acre Daniels Run Park and 20-acre Van Dyck Park; a network of recreational trails for bikers, walkers, and runners; the City of Fairfax Band and other arts programs, including free summer concerts and performances at Old Town Hall, 3999 University Drive; and seasonal celebrations. The city does not have a swimming pool.

Description: Not to be confused with the county park authority, Community and Recreation Services offers a wide variety of quarterly hobby and recreational classes—everything from aerobics and art to weight training and yoga—for Fairfax City and County residents. Most activities take place after hours at schools. The program also operates 7 community centers, 9 teen centers, 13 senior centers, therapeutic recreation services, and summer camps. The department shares its quarterly catalog with Fairfax County Public Schools’ Office of Adult and Community Education.

Description: This massive park authority oversees more than 350 parks on more than 16,000 acres, including 11 multiple-purpose parks and numerous neighborhood and community parks. Eight full-service recreation centers, 12 historical or archaeological sites, five golf courses, three miniature golf courses, and a countywide farmers’ market program also fall under the park authority’s jurisdiction.

Description: The center boasts an indoor pool, regulation-size gymnasium, fitness room, library, and auditorium for entertainment and community events. The JCC hosts a variety of programs for all ages, including an early childhood program, before- and after-school care, and summer camps. Many events are open to nonmembers.
