  • When I was a kid growing up in Bayport their wasn't much as far as shopping. This was around 1958 or so. There was Shand's Grocery Store, a deli across the street and a soda and newspaper shop on a small strip on Middle Road I believe. Fond memories of the Great South Bay and huge mansions that my friends lived in. I never realized I was part of a middle class family. Sayville was my favorite town about 4 to 5 miles away and had the Charlotte Shop a great store for clothing. Since gone. There was the Whistle Stop Coffee Shop where you could get the greatest tuna sandwiches. A&P and Bohack Grocery store were there in Sayville as well. Knitting store's (Flo's) my good friend owned it have been gone for decades. My dad had a camera store in Sayville for years.
