Description:
Historic Downtown Poteau, corp. focuses on the revitalization, preservation, and promotion of the Old Town district. Our goal is to create a vibrant downtown community that retains its rich ties to our history, while at the same time providing an enriching atmosphere full of modern shopping and dining.
The Old Town district traces its roots back to the late 1700's with the establishment of a French fur trading post at the base of the worlds highest hill, Cavanal. After this post was abandoned, a new town sprang up in the 1830's. Named Heckabbe's Station, this small town was a stage stop along the old military road leading from Ft. Smith. Following the Civil War, few settlers remained.
Buildings began springing up in the late 1800's. The first brick structure was built in 1800 and is still standing. It was once home of the Indian Territory Federal Court.
By the 1920's, Old Town Poteau was a thriving and bustling town. This boom period lasted until the 1980's, when a fire destroyed many buildings downtown.
Formed in 2002 as Poteau Main Street Matters, and then renamed to Historic Downtown Poteau in 2014, we have played an important part in revitalizing the downtown area.
By promoting key historical events, such as the Bonnie and Clyde robbery and our Outlaw heritage, we have been able to draw in a lot of tourists into the area. Progress is ongoing as we continue to expand our services.
We are a 501c3 non-profit organization.
