Hello all! Our family has seen many properties in Auburn Gresham walking distance to Beverly and we are really interested. Is it safe for a family with young children? Also diverse - friendly?

The western edge of the neighborhood borders Beverly. Driving through on 87th several times, I felt fine driving through, but crime stats show that Beverly is much safer by comparison even though they're neighbors. Additionally, the local Catholic church in the neighborhood, St. Sabina often seems to have a lot of anti-violence protests hosted by their pastor, Father Pfleger. Compared to other neighborhoods in Chicago with higher crime rates, this one seems to have some intent to improve, but still, doesn't seem great. My understanding is the public schools are not very good there. You might have better luck with St. Sabina's school, but if you can afford to look elsewhere look in a neighboring suburb outside of Chicago. The neighborhood isn't diverse - it's probably about 95% African American.
