Regardless, Chatham County is part of the Triangle and any projects will be considered as such.
With rumors of a possible major superconductor project locating in Chatham County, I really like what the state is trying to do along the I-685 corridor. It’s maximizing the asset of geography, promoting the state’s Core as a vital link to the aerospace, manufacturing, and health industries of the Triad with the big tech and big universities of the Triangle. Plus better linking the Core to I-95, the Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast Megalopolis.
Looks like the Carolina Core along future I-685 is really taking off. So far there are projects proposed for every megasite along the corridor except for the Chatham County site near Sanford. The corridor touches both the Triad and Triangle and Fayetteville needs to figure out how it could set itself up for some of this economic prosperity being that it is located at the end of the corridor.
I-685 could become the second fastest growing Interstate corridor in North Carolina after I-85/I-40 between Charlotte and Raleigh. Communities along the corridor could begin to see faster growth.
SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — A commonly traveled highway across the state could soon be upgraded to interstate status, connecting major economic hubs. A movement has emerged in the Piedmont Triad region to designate Highway 421 between interstates 85 and 95, as future Interstate-685.
The road would start near Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point and run to I-95 in Dunn, near Fayetteville. Cape Fear officials are looking to expand the route from Dunn all the way to Wilmington.
In total, the interstate would be a little over 200 miles, with the Wilmington portion of 421 — which ends in Fort Fisher — comprising 85 miles.
They're nuts! I'm not against making spot improvements to 421 east/south of Dunn wherever they might be needed, but there's zero need for an interstate running parallel with I-40 all the way to Wilmington. The only extension of I-685 east of Dunn that would even remotely make sense is along the general NC-55 corridor and tie into I-40 near Newton Grove. In the meantime, just take I-95 to I-40.
The only future interstate Wilmington should focus on is I-74.
