Media - Santa Fe, New Mexico

Media

Santa Fe might be small in population, but it’s huge in diversity. One need only spend a few hours nursing a latte at Downtown Subscription, 376 Garcia St., (505) 983-3085 (see our Restaurants chapter) to witness firsthand the fascinating mix of residents—and visitors, too—that makes Santa Fe “The City Different.”

It’s not just what the habitués are drinking or wearing that gives them away; it’s also whatever magazine or newspaper they happen to be thumbing through—and there are plenty to choose from at Downtown Subscription. The newsstand/cafe offers up to 1,000 periodical titles from around the world and around the corner.

It’s what comes from around the corner that interests us here. For such a small metropolis—remember, only 72,000 people call this city home—Santa Fe offers a surprisingly wide variety of homegrown publications to suit almost any taste, lifestyle, or political persuasion. Many of them, of course, continue to be hard hit by plummeting circulation as readers increasingly get up-to-date news from electronic media and advertisers follow them. After nine decades, the Albuquerque Tribune ceased publication in 2008, and both the Santa Fe New Mexican and Albuquerque Journal have gone through layoffs and reduced special sections of their newspapers. Also included in this chapter are several Albuquerque publications that have enough of a following in Santa Fe to merit mention.
