Connecticut’s small size is a benefit for travelers and gives newcomers and locals alike the opportunity to easily access a variety of conveniences and attractions. Travel into the state is easy by plane, train, and even ferry. Inevitably, though, travel within and through the state is largely dependent on the automobile, despite access to public transportation in the major urban areas. Indeed, the best way to see those out-of-the-way charms and get to know much of the Connecticut character is by car.
Much of Connecticut remains rural, and the roads less traveled present an accessible network for sightseers and cyclists. Back roads and country avenues weave throughout the state, and hiking trails provide the chance to wander around lakes and into the woodlands on foot. For many, getting around is a self-propelled activity or one that lends itself best to two wheels rather than four. It’s not uncommon during spring, summer, and autumn months for cyclists to be seen pedaling through Litchfield Hills or the Quiet Corner, or for a lone bicycle to take its place in the scenery along the Long Island shore. If traveling by car, watch out for cyclists, give them a wide berth as you pass, and don’t be surprised if you happen upon a road race.
