Like far too many West Virginia schools, Musselman Middle School serves its teachers first and students second. Homework is rarely assigned and grades are based largely on matters other than academic performance. (Challenge that statement and I will serve up oodles of specific examples of this.) This well explains Musselman's aggregate abysmal WesTest II results and, since most students cross the street to attend Musselman High School, also helps to explain that high school's horrendous standardized test results too. After all, the die is cast before high school and if your child is a poor performer on the tests that matter (standardized ones) by 8th grade, he or she will not perform well on these essential tests in high school. Exceptions occur, but they're rare. That's why they are called exceptions. So, if it's college you desire for your MMS child and you're not augmenting his or her studies at home with challenging work, best of luck to you. The A or B on your child's report card from MMS means very little. Good grades serve the teachers: They keep those pesky parents away.
