It's absolutely a part of the Orlando Metro, which consists of Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Lake counties. I agree that Lake is a clear outlier here in terms of feel and vibe, but it's a part of the MSA nonetheless.

Perhaps we should hold a referendum to boot it out of the MSA, maybe build a wall around it and charge aggressive tolls to cross into Orange and Seminole from there. I'd be down for that.

I don't get it. What were you afraid of? What did you think was going to happen?

The only time in my life that I have ever broken down far from home was on US-98 between Cross City and Fanning Springs in Dixie County. I had blown a tire and didn't have a spare. Thankfully there was a trailer park nearby, because a guy who lived there pulled over and took me to his trailer where he had piles of spare wheels and tires lying around. He helped get me up and going and didn't ask for a thing in return.

I was still fairly new to the south, and was stereotyping folks I assumed would stereotype me.
Scared of this kind of stuff:

Akin to a rich suburban white kid breaking down in the middle of East St. Louis at night, just reversed roles.

When homes with stucco facades disappear from sight, you’re probably entering a FL native conservation area.

Basically you'll have to define southern to determine which part of Florida is southern. People are surprised that Florida has southern culture and southern roots because the image of Florda is different from the rest of the south. I would say all of Northern Florida and parts of Central Florida. I know quite a few people from Central Florida that are culturally southern. People who are not too fond of the south love Florida at least enough to vacation there. Jacksonville is still deemed southern despite a growing number of transplants in the city and around it's suburbs. Most Floridans dub us as South Georgia. St Augustine is still southern to me but it is attracting a lot of people from south and Central Florida. I'm sure you can still find southern cusine, Southern Baptist churches, sweet tea, and a southern accent all throughout the state.
