Friday ~~ February 27, 2015 ~~ The first Friday of Lent

Posted 02-27-2015 at 04:30 AM by CSD610

which is also my Mother's 74th Birthday but I will not be seeing her today however, we are going to surprise her tomorrow.
My Uncle, her only brother is going to meet her at Golden Corral where she lives at 5:30 PM tomorrow evening and buy her supper and we are going to be there to have supper with them. Neither of them knows this and I hope I am feeling well enough to make the trip.

Other than that nothing too exciting around here. I am still sick but the pain in my arm is gone. That pain was the result of the Pneumonia that caused me to cough so much I "coughed out" 3 ribs and a few vertebrae. In english that means I coughed so hard my ribs and spine were out of alignment which caused pressure on nerves that caused extreme pain in my right arm.

I was thinking just a few minutes ago about our "status" (for lack of a better word at the moment).

What I mean is not that many years ago Mr. CSD and I had basically nothing in our home.
We had one bed, one computer desk, one computer chair, one dining table with 3 chairs, couch, chair, loveseat, 2 small dressers, one set of pots and pans, one set of 4 bowls, plates, saucers...
bare minimum of everything. Most of us have been in that position for one reason or another. Either you are a college student, just started a new job and not making much or out of a financial crisis and had to start over. So you take the clothes on your back, your salary and you start saving and you take things that someone gives you for free.

This usually means nothing in your home matches, you have one of everything, you have no credit cards, no checking account, have to account for every penny you spend and have to save for a long time to purchase a $50.00 DVD player, except you don't have a television or a DVD.

So I am looking around our home and I can honestly tell you I liked it a lot better when we had nothing because right now we have so much excess when it comes to physical tangible items. It is disgusting and it makes me sick how much we have collected over the years. It is stupid, wasteful and causes nothing but clutter, chaos and many more places for dust and dirt to hide.

There are two humans in our household to blame for this but one more than the other.
Mr. CSD is a collector, I am not however, I have let the "collector" side of Mr. CSD go untempered and he has allowed me to get anything and everything I want, huge mistake.

So today, the first day of Lent I am giving up all of our excess stuff for Lent and will continue to give up our excess stuff for Lent for the rest of my days to the best of my ability.

I am going to give away, throw away, scan, shred, sew, sell, and degadget myself into the absolute minimum when it comes to physical, tangible items in our home.

I really do not need 3 5 quart pots to boil pasta in. I do not need 3 mini choppers for onions and garlic. I do not need 2 complete 10 piece sets of dishes. I do not need 4 laptops, 1 desktop, 2 iPad mini's and one iPad. I do not need 6 printers. I do not need the manual typewriter and the electric typewriter. I do not need the binding machine and all of it's accessories. I do not need all of the accessories for the KitchenAid Mixer. I do not need 7 types of flour and 4 types of sugar. I do not need cases of canned soup which I rarely eat. I do not need those 4 dainty glass tea cups and saucers. I do not need more than 100 various glasses and coffee cups. I do not need........"the list goes on".

I am going to start with the scanning and shredding which is the least challenging but seems to take a lot of space with all of the file folders, documents, binders, envelopes, etc. Then I can move on to my books, I love books, I have always loved books but they take up so much space physically and there is no real reason not to get those books on the kindle if they are available. I have a kindle, Mr. CSD has a kindle. We also have the kindle app on our cell phones, iPads, laptops, and the desktop. So the question is, do we really need the actual kindle? Probably not since we have other devices we can use when we want to read a book.

I have 3 electronic cigarette devices, actually I have 5 but 2 of those are the vapor devices. I don't use them daily so do I really need them at all? Would it be more practical to get rid of all of them or keep one of each?
My goal is to quit smoking completely and just use the electronic cigarette or the vapor device. I just haven't been able to get past the entire physical part of smoking yet. Those of you who smoke know what I am talking about with the physical part. It is the taking the cigarette out of the pack, getting out your zippo and lighting it, then lighting the cigarette then you get that smell when the cigarette is lit.

Speaking of Zippo Lighters I think I have about 30 of those. Do I really need that many? Actually I will probably keep the lighters because they have different scenes on them and I purchased them for the scene or they were a gift. I just need to get a case for them and hang them on the wall for display.

How many ink pens do you have in your home? How many pencils? I can tell you within about 50 one way or the other that our home has a minimum of 700 various pens, pencils, erasers and sharpeners. Isn't that just silly? I remember when I was a child I had 1 (one) pencil and I used that pencil until it was gone then I got 1 (one) pencil to replace it. When I was a freshman in High School I saved my money and I bought myself 2 ink pens. One with a red barrel and one with a blue barrel. I still have those ink pens, they are Parker Brothers, they were very expensive back then and I can actually still get the refills for them. Those I will keep because that was quite an accomplishment for me to save enough to purchase those ink pens for myself.

So the goal has been set and I will get done as much as I can starting today even though I am still sick. I can sit at my desk and scan and shred documents for a while then go and lay down if I need to.

I will leave you with a few thoughts to ponder if you choose to:

Do you remember how many years ago you had nothing?
Were you happier, more organized and your home cleaner and neater?
Can you find 20 things in one room that you could live without if you got rid of them?
Do you like 2 fingers of Brandy to sip?

As usual I wish you restful sleep and peaceful dreams when it comes time for you to wander your timbers of slumber.
