Alternative Healing That Works
Last month I walked into an upscale physical therapy clinic in Naples. I gave the directors my usual presentation describing Reiki energy healing. I showed them my list of 40 peer reviewed academic research abstracts on the effectiveness of Reiki, demonstrating especially how Reiki can rapidly reduce or eliminate painful conditions. I showed them the more than 75 major USA hospitals currently offering Reiki, including Mayo Clinic, UCLA, John Hopkins, Harvard and Columbia University Medical Center and many more. The directors seemed especially interested when I showed the webpages these famous hospitals had created on Reiki and its benefits observed on their patients. I finally had the directors agree to have me give a demonstration on one of their patients in pain. I was asked to go to the waiting room and find a volunteer.
When I went to the waiting room, I saw that everyone there was elderly. After a brief explanation of the way Reiki energy healing has been proven to alleviate pain effectively, I asked who would volunteer to help me demonstrate what Reiki can do for them. There was no response from the crowd. I asked again who would like to get up and come with me to let Reiki energy healing alleviate their pain. But once again everyone was silent and no one stood up. Several people in the crowd were smiling cynically including the receptionists by the door. The two receptionists then looked at one another and smirked rudely. I held up and waived the folder containing the 40 peer reviewed academic research abstracts on Reiki, explaining what it is and why hospitals like UCLA have been offering Reiki treatments to patients. I told the way the success of Reiki on healing chronic pain at UCLA has been featured on CNN. I told them to check out the way UCLA’s website states that alternative therapies including Reiki “have proven very effective in reducing the need for heavy doses of pain medication for oncology patients”. I asked those people if they were still not open to finding out something new that day, which could have the same benefits for them as the patients of UCLA. Did they really not care to be able to reduce their pain meds naturally or get off them?
The receptionists was no longer smirking and were curiously watching what would happen next. Then an ancient guy wearing hearing aids did manage to get up with the help of his walker. He begun to shout at the top of his lungs “It’s crazy, it’s all make believe! The doctors have gone mad! The whole world has gone mad!” He then started huffing angrily, stomping on the floor like a four year old. His caregiver tried to calm him down as she begun to try to usher him out of the room. I felt very sorry and apologized for the way my words had caused the guy’s fragile mental equilibrium to become that disturbed. I turned around and was also trying to get out, when another elderly gentleman stopped me by putting his hand on my shoulder. He said: “I’m a retired cardiac surgeon. I heard the way directors like Dr. Oz and Dr. Sheldon Marc Feldman at Columbia University have gone far enough to incorporate Reiki into their surgical procedures. I heard all about the academic research on Reiki. But the main shortcoming of that research is the way most of it has been conducted on very small sample sizes. I personally refuse to take energy healing seriously.”
I told the gentleman: “Even though I do Reiki energy healing, I hold a Masters Degree and also know how to evaluate academic research. We both know that peer reviewed academic journals are considered the most prestigious. Passing the peer reviewing process is an indicator of highest quality research. The sample sizes in those 40 studies were not small enough to disqualify them from being recommended for publication by their reviewing peers who hold positions in universities. Those academics would not dare risk their credibility and jobs for recommending research conducted with unsound methods. I could understand your skepticism if there were only one or two research studies on Reiki, but how do you explain the 40 peer reviewed published studies I have here, which is far from being an all-inclusive collection?” After saying all this I abruptly turned around and finally got out.
On my drive back from that clinic, I thought about Dr. Oz’s following words he told the word on CNN:
“I think that energy and the use of energy healing will be the biggest frontier medicine of the next decade.”
It all made me recall another famous quote I had once heard. When I went home I searched Google and found the way Max Planck had noted:
“A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.”
Why was there no Reiki research with very large sample sizes like some other research studies sponsored by wealthy pharmaceutical companies? I searched the Interned for a considerable time looking for more recent Reiki research studies with larger sample sizes. Even though I could not find such research, I did find the following interesting fact in a feature article on Reiki published in The Washington Post Newspaper. In this article called “Reiki goes mainstream”, it is stated:
“A 2008 American Hospital Association survey found that 84 percent of hospitals reported patient demand as the primary rationale in offering complementary medicine services including Reiki.”
What would better represent a large enough “sample size” confirming the effectiveness of Reiki than this finding of the 2008 survey by the American Hospital Association?
I knew the way the MD’s and scientists of the next generation would definitely conduct more advanced Reiki research. Regarding some of this generation’s doctors’ and researchers’ denial and resistance to having heard about Reiki’s benefits, I recalled another famous quote by Goethe:
“Everyone hears only what he understands.”
Many Westerners find it impossible to understand the Ki or Qui energy as a tangible and palpable life force energy that permeates living forms. I get plenty of blank stares when I tell people the way Reiki is the Harmonizing Energy responsible for Nature’s balance, which also holds together our body’s synergistic coherence representing our health. In short, no matter how hard it may be for the materialistic Newtonian generation to accept, Reiki is the Harmonizing Intelligence permeating the universe, which creates the incredibly advanced form of synergistic coherence called life, and which is an energy field that can be directed by us.
Even if one finds it hard to understand what Reiki is, a Reiki treatment can let everyone feel this harmonizing energy flow into them in a way that feels very similar to heat. The resulting effects have nothing to do with placebo since one does not need to have any prior belief to be able to receive health benefits. Regarding the need to experience this harmonizing force of Nature and heal naturally, I especially like how Alan Cohen put it:
“It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.”
John Lilly was known to have said:
“Our only security is our ability to change.”
I have been practicing Reiki energy healing for 12 years, and have seen the way several months of consecutive treatments can even permanently do away with “incurable” diseases such as cancer, lupus or multiple sclerosis as well as reverse heart disease and much more, in addition to healing painful conditions like even advanced arthritis or fibromyalgia. I have experienced the way Reiki has helped people succeed in losing weight and reducing high blood pressure. I have seen many cases of relief from clinical depression and stress related disorders. I find my job extremely fulfilling in spite of its occasional challenges.
