Have you ever purchased a seemingly perfect container of strawberries only to find them covered in mould just a few days later?
Scientists have discovered a fungus that infects berries in the field, but doesn't physically appear until after the fruit ripens. The fungus, gray mould, can quickly spread in shipping containers and cause significant losses.
In the United States, it's estimated that 100 per cent of all strawberry acres are infected with the gray mould fungus, one of the biggest challenges in commercial strawberry production. Crop losses from the mould are especially severe under moist growing conditions and can occur both in the field and during transportation and storage.
Strawberry growers protect their crops with fungicides during the bloom and fruit maturation to keep us supplied with healthy, mould-free berries.
