Grill smart this barbecue season with natural gas

Posted 09-18-2015 at 07:34 AM by DavidRaonic

With Ontario summers as fleeting as they can feel, there's no better reminder of how great the season can be than by celebrating with a backyard barbecue.

“Canadians braved a record-setting winter, and they are eager to pull off the barbecue cover and fire up the grill,” says Bob Betts, a spokesperson for the Ontario Natural Gas Alliance. “Barbecuing is no longer just about what's on the grill—in fact, pit-masters are looking for the most effective, economical and safest way to enjoy this seasonal favourite activity without burning the wallet.”

The age-old debate of gas vs. charcoal and propane has been nibbled on for centuries—charcoal aficionados cite their preference for the unique smoky flavour that comes from this method of grilling, and advocates for propane argue that this method brings unbeatable, rapid heat.

Reality might beg to differ—dinner guests often find themselves unable to discern the “smoky” flavour; leftover coals and lighter fluid have been the cause of many preventable fires, and propane models, meanwhile, also come with the inconvenience of constantly needing to refill their tanks.

“Natural gas barbecues have become better sellers over the past few years for a myriad of reasons,” explains Betts.

Money in the bank

Switching to natural gas is the more economical choice for the in-the-know grill master—and it has never been easier. Ontarians can take advantage of the cost-effective installation, starting at approximately $350 for each 10-foot extension from the main line and the currently low natural gas prices to maximize their investment. Compared to using propane, natural gas provides a reliable fuel source, helps save up to three times more, does not require frequent monitoring of use; and no more running back and forth to the gas station or a retailer for refills. In addition, barbecuing using charcoal and propane costs families as much as $5 per cookout vs. less than $1 in fuel for natural gas. More bucks in the pocket means more savings for other things in life, perhaps a new barbecue next summer?

Natural gas brings the heat

Barbecue lovers can show off their mastery skills and enjoy fine grilled fare with their guests in as little as 15-20 minutes. Less prepping, cooking and clean-up time compared to using charcoal, also allows for more spontaneous get-togethers—turn a weekday night dinner into an impromptu friends and family gathering in no time.

Let the grill do the work

New and veteran barbecue enthusiasts can rely on natural gas barbecue to provide ease of use when grilling—comparable to every day cooking. Easily control the heat as you wish by turning the dial up or down, and the addition of a thermometer helps gauge exact cooking temperatures. True barbecue lovers appreciate control and precision when it comes to a perfect barbecue.
